FAQs, Higher Productivity

Haas vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers (VMCs and HMCs) are available with a Programmable Coolant Nozzle (P-Cool) that automatically directs coolant precisely at the cutting area for each tool, eliminating the need for constant adjustments by the operator. The P-Cool nozzle is controlled automatically by the part program, and can also be adjusted from the keypad while the program is running.

Setting the Programmable Coolant Nozzle Position

The position of the P-Cool nozzle for each tool is specified by entering the appropriate number in the Coolant Position column of the Tool Offsets table. The process is as follows:

Programmable Coolant

  1. With the selected tool in the spindle, press the OFFSET button to enter the Tool Offsets table.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select the tool for which you want to set the coolant position, and then highlight the corresponding line in the Coolant Position column.
  3. Use the CLNT UP and CLNT DOWN buttons to move the P-Cool nozzle into the desired position for the selected tool (you may want to turn on the coolant while doing this to make sure the nozzle is directing the coolant where you want it). Once the nozzle is properly adjusted, note the coolant position number displayed in the bottom-left corner of the Offsets screen.
  4. Enter the coolant position number for the selected tool in the Coolant Position column and press F1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each tool.
  5. To recall the nozzle position for each tool, enter an H code in the program. The nozzle will move to the position entered for the specified tool when the associated H code and M08 are called. For example, H2 will command the nozzle to the position entered in the Coolant Position column for Tool 2.

Fine-Tuning the Programmable Coolant Nozzle

The position of the Programmable Coolant Nozzle can be fine-tuned while a program is running using the CLNT UP and CONT DOWN keys. The P-Cool nozzle can also be moved incrementally using M-codes within the program. Inserting an M34 in the program cause the nozzle to increment down one position; inserting an M35 will increment the nozzle up one position.

M08                Coolant On

M34                Coolant Increment (down)

M35                Coolant Decrement (up)

H code           Tool length offset

T code            Tool number
